The Fed Waits on One Number While Markets Move Faster

July's inflation report lands as the last major reading before the Fed's September meeting, even as chipmaker TSMC and oil markets are already showing how fast conditions can shift.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics released July's Consumer Price Index this week, the last major inflation reading before the Federal Reserve's next meeting. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones had expected the annual rate to come in near 3.4%, down slightly from June's 3.5%, according to NBC News. Whatever the final number showed, it was always going to carry outsized weight as the single monthly print the Fed has to work with heading into its September decision.

Fed Chair Kevin Warsh has reportedly told colleagues he could support a rate increase in September if incoming inflation data runs hot, according to Financial Times reporting cited by Yahoo Finance and Tech Times. That account has not been independently corroborated by additional named outlets, so it should be read as a single, sourced report rather than settled fact. Markets nonetheless reacted: CME FedWatch data showed the odds of a quarter-point September hike ticking up, and Treasury yields moved modestly higher, per Bloomberg's market coverage. Those are small shifts, but they show investors are already pricing in a chairman's reported private reasoning, not just his public statements.

Separately, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. reported July net revenue of NT$467.58 billion, up 44.7% year over year, according to the company's own August 10 disclosure. That is a monthly figure, distinct from TSMC's second-quarter results reported July 16, when the company posted revenue growth of 36% year over year to $40.2 billion, per its SEC filing. TSMC's monthly reporting habit means investors get a fresh signal on AI chip demand every 30 days, a faster cadence than most of the government data the Fed relies on.

Oil prices have also been climbing in recent days amid heightened tension in the region around the Strait of Hormuz, a major seaborne oil route, according to market reports. US crude settled near $83 as the situation remained unresolved. Energy costs can filter into consumer prices within weeks, but the report the Fed is waiting on was built before this month's oil moves fully showed up in the data.

None of this means the Fed is doing anything wrong. Chair Warsh has chosen to limit forward guidance, a deliberate bet that markets should trade on fundamentals rather than Fed signaling. But that approach, paired with reliance on a single monthly print, means the data the Fed leans on can lag a faster-moving world of chip orders, shipping lanes, and bond yields. Watch Thursday's producer price report and the jobs data due before the Fed's September 15-16 meeting for signs of whether July's CPI reading holds up, or gets overtaken again before the vote.
