The artificial intelligence trade that has driven much of this year's stock market gains showed no signs of slowing this week.
Micron Technology, one of the world's largest makers of memory chips used in AI servers and data centers, reported quarterly results in which revenue roughly quadrupled, a performance strong enough to lift shares across the broader semiconductor sector. Micron's stock is up about 270% so far this year, a reflection of how central memory chip demand has become to the broader AI buildout, as companies race to add computing capacity for training and running AI models.
Alphabet, Google's parent company, also moved markets this week after introducing its newest Gemini AI model, sending its shares roughly 2% higher in early trading. The announcement adds to a busy year of AI model releases across the industry, as major technology companies compete to offer the most capable systems to businesses and consumers.
The AI rally has created a notable divergence inside the broader stock market. Most components of the S&P 500 actually finished September in negative territory, with gains concentrated heavily in technology and AI adjacent names carrying the index higher. That same pattern repeated at the start of October, with chip and AI stocks providing support even as rising bond yields and oil prices weighed on much of the rest of the market.
Investors will be watching whether AI related earnings and product announcements can keep offsetting pressure from higher interest rates, or whether a broader market pullback eventually catches up with the sector that has carried most of this year's gains.
Why did Micron's earnings matter so much to the broader market?
Micron makes memory chips central to AI servers and data centers, so its blowout results were read as a signal of continued strong demand for AI infrastructure.
Is the stock market's strength broad based?
Not entirely. Reporting this week noted that most individual S&P 500 components fell in September, with gains concentrated in a relatively narrow group of technology and AI related stocks.
