Indonesia is dealing with two separate but related challenges this month: a severe wildfire season in its western islands, and a safety review of the kitchens supplying its large free meals program for students.
According to the Copernicus Climate Change Service, wildfires burning across Kalimantan, on the Indonesian portion of Borneo, and Sumatra produced more than 19.7 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions between September 1 and 7, the highest total from any fire source in the world during that period and more than a third of all global fire emissions. Indonesia experiences a seasonal fire problem most years during its dry season, often linked to land being cleared for agriculture, and the resulting haze can affect air quality across the wider region, including neighboring countries.
Separately, Indonesia's national food agency has suspended nearly 2,000 kitchens taking part in the country's free meals program for schoolchildren after they failed to register for mandatory sanitation inspections. The suspension is part of a wider effort by the agency to tighten food safety standards following a number of food poisoning cases linked to the program, which is one of the government's largest social initiatives and feeds millions of students daily.
Both issues illustrate the scale of the logistical and environmental challenges facing Indonesia, an archipelago nation of more than 270 million people, as it manages large public programs and seasonal environmental hazards at the same time.
Authorities are expected to continue inspections of the free meals kitchens in the coming weeks, while monitoring of fire activity and haze levels typically continues through the remainder of the dry season.
